Researching Online Nursing Programs
Online nursing programs are the new buzz word of the nursing field. With the current nursing shortage in the U.S., the nursing field has found itself with an aging population of nurses, as well as a ‘backup’ in the enrollment of traditional brick-and-mortar nursing programs.
What exactly is an online nursing program and how does it differ from a traditional nursing program? There are many obvious and subtle differences. For example, an online nursing program is specifically geared toward nurses already holding at least a LPN or LVN degree. Online nursing programs are also available for medical assistants, lab techs, and a multitude of other ancillary staff positions.
The benefits of an online education versus a traditional classroom is that individuals, especially those with children and/or full time jobs, can still advance their degrees without having to physically attend a school campus for classroom lectures. While the inference in online education leads one to think that all classes are online, such is not necessarily the case. Most online colleges also incorporate courses where the student receives a textbook, syllabus and then studies with paper and pencil. Upon completion of those studies, the student then takes a written exam, usually at specifically designated testing centers.
The average cost of online nursing programs vary from significantly less to slightly more depending on the school and courses offered as compared to brick and mortar classroom study. However, prospective students must also take into consideration the savings in regard to traveling time, baby-sitters, loss of job income and/or other physical or emotional strains that attending traditional schools may cause. Many options are available for paying, including ‘pay as you go’, to Pell Grants, scholarships and student loans. Most colleges offer financial advice and assistance to ensure nothing gets in the way of advancement of education.
If you’re considering a career in nursing and need to explore options, this may be right for you. A word of caution though, online classes are not for every one. To succeed with this type of education, you must be able to discipline your time for regular study and not be easily distracted. There are many websites and hubs offering various courses, so do your homework carefully. Be certain that the program you choose is accredited in your state and by your local State Board of Nursing before you sign up. Although most states recognize online degrees, there are still a few that don’t, so be sure to check. If you have any friends or acquaintances that have pursued online study programs, talk with them and get their recommendations as well.
Offered at most online nursing schools are two-year Associate programs, four-year Bachelor of Science degrees and post-graduate Master’s degrees. Online nursing programs offer independent thinking students quality educations that many times surpass those of traditional schools.
